I'm arguing that the internet is a medium and shouldn't be a proper noun anymoreso than say, television. Here's Wired's reasoning to boot: http://www.wired.com/news/culture/0,1284,64596,00.html
I would continue capitalizing World Wide Web, but it's like saying I'm going to turn on the radio. There is this thing "radio" as well as the object used to hear stations broadcast using radio which is called a "radio." The singular aspect of the medium of radio is still not capitalized.
